All registered NPOs are a distinct legal entity and therefore, an artificial person. NPOs in India are accountable to the laws under which they are enacted and avail subsequent registration. Some of such statuses in India are:

  • Societies Registration Act, 1860 (along with the state enactment)
  • The Companies Act, 2013(for Section 8 company)
  • Income Tax Act, 1961
  • Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010
  • Other statutes as and when applicable
